Compare Centrifugal and Masticating Juice Extractors: Breville vs. Omega

Various Fruit Juices

If you're planning to get a juice extractor, but you can't decide whether to get a centrifugal or masticating unit, you may find this article useful.

The main advantage of centrifugal juice extractors is the speed at which the juice is obtained. All you have to do is wash your ingredients, chop them, introduce them through some sort of chute, and start the machine. The juice will be extracted in no time at all! In these machines, the rapid rotation creates a powerful centrifugal force that squeezes the liquid out of the ingredients. A centrifugal extractor will usually juice both hard and soft fruits and vegetables, but they will be much less efficient with herbs and leafy vegetables.

Masticating juice extractors operate at much lower speeds than centrifugal machines. They use cold press methods to extract the juice by masticating and grinding the ingredients into a pulp through a strictly mechanical process. They are very efficient not just with soft and hard vegetables and fruits, but also with herbs and leafy vegetables.

Because masticating juicers have lower speeds, the extracted juice gets into contact with less air when compared with the juice extracted by centrifugal units. Therefore the nutrients in the juice are more protected from oxidation than the juice extracted by a centrifugal unit where the juice gets into contact with plenty of air due to the high rotational speed. As a result, the juice obtained with centrifugal extractors may lose some of its beneficial values. But of course, there still remains plenty of nutrients in the juice to make it worth drinking. It's just that with masticating juicers, there is less loss of nutrients. On the other hand,  masticating juice extractors  require more preparation time as well as more cleaning work.

As you compare juice extractors, if you are not sure which type of juicer to get, consider the following:

1 If you are always in a rush and have no time for lengthier preparation and juicing, a centrifugal juicer might suit you better. Note that as long as you drink the juice soon after it has been extracted without leaving it for a long time in the fridge, the effects of the oxidation will not be serious.

2 If noise is a major consideration for you, you may want to opt for a masticating juicer as the centrifugal machines tend to be noisier.

3Finally, if you are also planning to extract juice from herbs and leafy vegetables you should definitely choose a masticating juicer.

Now that the difference between the two types of juice extractors has been explained, the rest of this review will focus on Breville centrifugal and Omega masticating juicers which are among the best and most popular brands from both types (Breville and Omega make juicers of both types, but Breville is known to make some of the best centrifugal juicers, while Omega is known to make excellent masticating juicers).

The review will first compare and describe the most popular Breville centrifugal juicers among Amazon customers, followed by a comparison and description of the most popular Omega masticating juicers.

Specific product recommendations will follow.

Comparing Breville Centrifugal Juicers:

The most popular centrifugal juicers among Amazon buyers are made by Breville. If they are so popular, it's mainly because they are the best centrifugal juicers available on the market today. Not only do they come with great features, but they are also equipped with powerful motors that can reach high rotational speeds. This ensures quick juicing of even the hardest types of fruits and vegetables and the production of high juice quantities. They are also very easy to assemble and clean, and they have attractive and sleek designs that will complement well a modern looking kitchen.

Breville has quite a few centrifugal juicers in their product lineup. The most popular ones among Amazon customers are Breville JE98XL and Breville BJE200XL. The other larger and heavier Breville model worth considering is the Breville 800JEXL.

Here is a summary comparison of the features of the three Breville juicers:

Detailed description of the four Breville juicers compared above follows:

Breville BJE200XL is a little marvel that provides heavy-duty performance in a space-saving design! Smaller than the JE98XL, BJE510XL and 800JEXL, it's still very powerful with a 700-watt motor that operates at 13,000 RPM for maximum extraction in the shortest time.

The unit comes with a stabilizing dual knife assembly which increases considerably the juice yield. It includes an extra-large 3-inch feed tube that allows for juicing whole fruits and vegetables. It also comes with a safety lock mechanism that prevents unsafe operation. Finally, the unit's easy-to-clean internal pulp container assembles in seconds, and the removable parts clean up quickly by hand or in the dishwasher.

This juicer is ideal for first-time juicers. It is equipped with a dual speed, 850 watt motor that allows you to juice hard fruits and vegetables on high speed at 12,000 RPM, while the 6,500 RPM low speed is optimal for softer fruits and leafy green vegetables like cantaloupe and spinach.

The cutting disc is so powerful that pineapple can be juiced in large chunks with the rind on. In addition, this juicer features an extra-wide 3-inch feeder chute that accommodates large chunks or entire pieces of fruit or vegetables, eliminating the need for chopping vegetables.

The JE98XL is not only easy to use, but also easy to clean. It is pulp-ejecting and comes with a large-capacity pulp collector and most parts can be cleaned on the top shelf of the dishwasher.

Note: At the time of this writing, this was the #1 selling Breville juicer among Amazon customers!

Breville 800JEXL Centrifugal Juicer

The 800JEXL has a 3-inch circular feeding tube and comes with two speed selections: 6500 RPM and 13000 RPM. The variable speeds allow better control over how you juice the fruits and vegetables based on the hardness and sizes of the pieces to be juiced. In addition, it has a powerful motor of 1000W.

This machine can produce easily an 8-ounce glass of juice in just five seconds. It is mostly made of stainless steel and is very sturdy. It is equipped with a safety lock mechanism that prevents unsafe operation.

Comparing Omega Masticating Juicers:

Variety of Fruits and Vegetables
The most popular masticating juicers among Amazon buyers are made by Omega, a company well known for its high-quality, durable and dependable juice extractors.

The Omega masticating juicers are today the best available machines in their category. These machines are more suitable than centrifugal juicers for processing leafy greens and herbs. Also most juicers run at very high speeds destroying some of the healthy enzymes and causing juice to degrade shortly after being extracted. The Omega juicers extract at 80 RPM, preventing oxidation and making it possible to store the juice up to 72 hours with no degradation.

Here is a summary comparison of the features of the most popular four Omega juicers, the J8005, J8006, VRT 330, and the VRT 350:

Omega Masticating Juicers Comparison Table
(*): The Omega J8005 and J8006 juicers are identical except for the fact that the J8006 auger (the drilling element of the juicer that crushes and juices the foods) is made of GE ULTEM which is harder and 8 times more resistant than other auger technologies used in masticating juicers. This makes J8006 slightly more expensive than J8005 and with a longer warranty.

(**): The Omega VRT330 and VRT350 juicers are identical except for the fact that VRT350 has an internal screen made of GE ULTEM which is harder than other technologies used in masticating juicers, and it comes in a different finish (satin). This makes VRT350 more expensive than VRT330.

Detailed descriptions of each of the juicers compared above follows:

J8005 and J8006 Omega Masticating Juicers

Omega J8006 Juicer
Omega J8006 (Photo Credits: Omega)
The Omega J8006 juicer seen in the picture is a single auger masticating style juicer equipped with a powerful commercial motor which enables the juicer to thoroughly masticate and chew plant fibers for efficient extraction of vitamins and other nutrients. The auger is made of hard melamine, and the low rotation speed of 80 RPMs prevents foaming, clogging, and heat build-up. This machine is also equipped with the auto pulp-ejection function for continuous and efficient juicing. Other highlights include a high juice yield with very dry pulp, heavy-duty construction and four stabilizing feet. The motor runs smoothly generating very little noise, and the parts are easily assembled and taken apart for cleaning. Note that the Omega J8006 is not just a juice extractor, but is more like a food processor. The various attachments can easily convert it into a mincer, pasta maker, etc. Finally, one big plus on this machine is that the manufacturer gives 15 year warranty on all parts and labor.

Omega also makes the J8005 juicer which is identical to J8006 in every respect, except for the material the auger (or the rotating gear) is made of. The J8006 auger is made of GE ULTEM which is harder than other auger technologies used in masticating juicers. That also explains why the J8006 has a 15 year warranty, while the J8005 has only a 10 year one. The J8006 is of course more expensive, and if you can afford about $50 dollar difference in price, you should go for it. But you will be just as happy with the J8005 which is an excellent product.

VRT330 Omega Masticating Juicer

Omega VRT330 Juicer

Another Omega masticating juicer worth considering is the Omega VRT330. This is an upright, single auger, masticating juice extractor, and therefore takes up less space than the J8006. It is equipped with a powerful commercial 2 hp motor and is very efficient with leafy greens and herbs. The unit has a dual stage juicing system which ensures maximum juice and extremely dry pulp. Like in the J8006 juicer, the low rotation speed of 80 RPMs result in minimal heat build up and oxidation, and therefore maximum extraction of juice and nutrients.

The juicer has a wide chute opening and comes also with the automatic pulp-ejection function which allows for continuous juicing. One additional feature is the self-feeding design, which allows the rotating auger to suck in the ingredients, crushing them into a pulp, and then squeezing the pulp to extract the juice.

Other highlights include built-in reverse mode to prevent food from getting stuck, heavy-duty construction, and quiet operation due to squeezing slowly rather than operating at high speed like centrifugal juicers. The Omega VRT330 juicer is easy to assemble, operate, and clean. It carries a 10-year limited warranty. It is offered in three different colors: white, pearl white and silver.

Omega also makes the VRT350 model which is identical to the VRT330 except that  its internal screen is made of more heavy duty material (ULTEM). So, if you're going to be using the unit very often, you may want to choose the VRT350. Otherwise you can save a few dollars and get a VRT330.  It is offered in three different colors: red, cinnamon and silver.

The Omega J8006, J8005, VRT330 and VRT350 models are all excellent, sturdy, durable and efficient juicers. But the juicing process is somewhat faster and easier with the VRT330/VRT350 due to the self feeding feature. On the other hand, Omega J8006 and J8005 are easier to clean, and they can be used not just as a juicer, but also as a food processor  using the various attachments, for mincing herbs and garlic, grinding coffee beans, pasta making, etc.

Some Final Notes:

When you compare juice extractors available on the market, you can find much lower priced machines than those described above (such as the popular Hamilton Beach 67650 in the centrifugal juicers category). However, you will find that what you gain in price you lose in durability, efficiency, ease of use, sturdiness and looks.

For instance, you might find that cheaper brands are not efficient with softer ingredients, wasting a lot of juice in the pulp, or that they are not powerful enough to juice efficiently harder produce. Also, often these lower priced brands will be made, at least partly, of cheaper quality plastic and will neither be esthetically very attractive, nor sturdy enough for long durability.

If you are serious about juicing, and you want an efficient, sturdy and stylish centrifugal juicer that will last for many years, We strongly recommend the brands described in this review (see below for details on how to purchase on Amazon).

But remember that if you want to juice leafy vegetables and herbs you should definitely get a masticating juicer, while for fruits and hard vegetables centrifugal juicers are perfect.
