Compare Popular Freestanding Wine Coolers: Whynter vs. NutriChef

If your home does not have a cellar, and you want to create the temperature and humidity conditions that are needed to keep your wine in top notch state, your best option is to get a wine cooler, sometimes also referred to as a wine chiller or wine refrigerator.

These units maintain your wines at a uniform temperature which is required to keep them in top condition. They are equipped with thermostat controls for selecting the desired temperature.

They come in various sizes and can house from 6 to 75 bottles. You could get under-counter as well as free standing units. However, as most kitchens do not have extra under-counter space, we will focus here only on the free-standing models. Also, if you are a wine lover, it is not recommended to buy models that can contain less than 15 bottles. This is because having a wine cooler will give you additional incentive to try and discover new wines, and pretty soon you will find that you will have to replace your wine cooler with a larger one.

Note that wine coolers are either compressor-based or thermoelectric:
  • Compressor-based wine coolers are more powerful than thermoelectric coolers and therefore can more efficiently handle a higher number of bottles. They can also better keep a stable internal temperature when outside environmental conditions change. On the other hand, due to the moving parts in the compressor, the cooler may present some vibrations and some noise. But high-quality compressor coolers use rubber brushing in order to absorb the vibrations and the noise.
  • Thermoelectric wine coolers are less noisy since they have fewer moving parts, and for the same reason, they do not vibrate at all which is great for not disturbing the delicate wine sediment. On the other hand, thermoelectric coolers can efficiently handle fewer quantities of bottles and may require more energy since they must be on all the time as opposed to compressor-based coolers that turn on as required. Their internal temperature can also be more easily affected by environmental conditions.

The two wine cooolers we selected for comparison are the NutriChef PKCWC150 15 Bottle and the Whynter WC-201TD 20 Bottle.

So which of the two selected wine coolers should you buy?

The two wine coolers considered here are comparable in capacity as they can hold 15-20 bottles. However, they present some important structural difference. NutriChef PKCWC150 is a compressor-based unit, while Whynter WC-201TD is thermoelectric.

Though the NutriChef cooler is well built, has almost no noise and presents little vibration, if you intend to keep your wine bottles for a long time in the cooler to get them well aged, you should consider the thermoelectric Whynter cooler, as even minimal vibration may affect in the long run the delicate wine sediment.

On the other hand, if you don't have a well isolated cellar where the cooler can be kept away from environmental changes, you should consider the NutriChef, as compressor-based coolers can keep better a stable internal temperature without being affected by exterior environmental factors.

If floor space is a problem, you might want to choose the NutriChef cooler, as it is the one that requires the smallest floor space, even though it can still hold 15 bottles. Note also that with the NutriChef  cooler, you can achieve a slightly lower temperature in the cooler (41°F).
